Katana Villa Bali is a magical world in itself embedded in the most tropical of all landscapes, overlooking the Indian Ocean. The lush garden is a playing field of hidden secrets and stunning architecture, romantic hideouts or meditative spots like our romantic elevated gazebo overlooking the Indian Ocean. A sparkling pool with two levels where you can either enjoy swimming underneath a waterfall or leisurely float on top in more shallow waters while enjoying the view onto the Balinese coast before gliding back into the crystal clear main pool via a waterslide which is a joy for both adults and children. Once back in the main pool, one can explore further by swimming into the hidden romantic grotto and get lost in your own magical world protected by a cascade of water and boulders.

Villa Staff

Villa StaffKatana Villa has a full time Staff providing you with daily cleaning of the rooms, laundry service, light shopping, and towel and sheet replacement. However, since we are eco-friendly we prefer to replace the sheets and towels every three to four days, or upon your request. Our personal assistant on the property will direct the staff for you to make sure you have the tropical island holiday of a lifetime. If desired, he or she will guide you to local hidden treasures that include a private mud scrub, a local sacred ceremony, or the chance of visiting a typical Balinese family at their home to enjoy their local cuisine and lifestyle. Our staff are also trained to carry passengers on local scooter rides for those of you who prefer to be driven.

Katana Villa has staff members that live on site in their own quarters and can be available 24/7 if case of emergency. For security reasons this will give you peace of mind when staying at Katana Villa. Please keep in mind that Katana Villa is not a Five Star Hotel, rather is it like your own Private Villa, therefore all staff members are local Balinese with little to no professional training. Some of them have even been here since day one before the walls were erected and have grown with Katana Villa. They are all hospitable and always eager to help with a genuine smile on their faces, just as Balinese people are so famous for.

Length of Stay

We recommend a minimum three-day stay to fully appreciate all Katana Villa has to offer, and a one to two week stay for Christmas, New Years, and Easter Holidays. It generally takes most guests three or four days to unwind. If it is your first time at our luxurious Katana Villa, we recommend the minimum of three days up to a one week stay, but for most of our guests they found two or three weeks are just right because there is so much East Bali has to offer, as well as boat shuttles that can take you to the Gili and Lombok Islands.

The Weather in Bali

Romantic SunsetThe temperature in Bali year round will never really drop below thirty degrees, however even Bali has different seasons known as the dry and wet seasons. In the wet season, which usually starts in late November and lasts until April or early May, the landscape in East Bali and around Katana Villa is incredibly lush, green, and tropical during this time. Since Bali clouds are vertical in shape, the rain bursts usually only last in short intervals. But of course no one can forecast the actual down falls so please check weather reports before making your reservation. During the dry season the landscape changes dramatically in this part of the island, although still tropical it is not as humid as other parts of the Island, reminding many people of the Mediterranean summer weather. You should know that our dry season usually brings a stiff breeze, which often visits Katana Villa in the afternoons. For those of you who love a good Summer breeze, you will truly enjoy this. It is also recommended to bring a light sweater for the evenings at this time.

Meals

Breakfast is included, which consists of eggs, toast, fresh fruit, juice, coffee or tea. Pancakes are also available if requested. Think of Katana Villa as your home away from home. Our kitchen is your kitchen and is fully equipped with all major appliances that will guarantee you the freedom of choice of how and when you can enjoy your own meals. If desired, catered meals can be arranged for an additional charge. However, our staff will always be available to do light shopping and upon request will assist in any way they can. We can arrange serviced meals for an extra charge. For dinner, if you wish to have a catered dine-in, you need to speak with us in the morning regarding your request. Alternatively, the local village offers some fine restaurants for your dining pleasure. Ask Leslie or our Villa Manager for recommendations. You can simply walk or use our house scooters for transport or get a chauffeur-driven car, which you can book in advance from our staff.

Electricity

Real BaliSince Katana Villa is situated in an area of which is still considered the “Real Bali’” tucked away from over crowded tourism, a “true gem” because you will actually be living within the true Balinese Hindu nature and lifestyle that is still not totally commercialized. For this reason East Bali is also known to have power black outs during times of heavy loads on the power grid. However, they do not occur very often but they do happen. Having a flashlight with you would be a good idea. There are also candles available in each room. But do not worry, the electricity always returns. We do want to remind you, as being eco-friendly to always conserve the usage of your A/C by not letting it run all day while outside your room and by keeping your windows and doors shut while it is running.

Water

Our crystal clear well water at Katana Villa comes from a fresh Spring source deep underground and we pump it up. Since we are eco-friendly, we ask that you not leave taps running for the welfare of Bali, especially during dry season (June, July, August, September, October). We would also like to mention that although sweet tasting and drinkable by most standards, we do not recommended that you directly drink the tap water. We will provide you with fresh bottled water in a cooler near the bar.

Internet Services

The luxurious Katana Villa has high-speed Internet Wifi for your use. If you feel like working on your laptop outside the Villa, there are a number of Internet Cafés in Amed and Bunutan of which offer wifi as well as Internet Services. There is also a public pay phone in the village for International calls.

Massage and Spa Treatments

Bali is a Mecca for massage and spa treatments. There are many local villagers who perform a traditional Balinese massage. There are also local healers who perform therapeutic massage for your stressed out muscles, body, and limbs. If you want to take advantage of these low cost stress and pain relief massages then you should speak with your Villa or Grounds Manager. She or he can organize the most appropriate masseuse in the village or you can ask for one to come directly to Katana Villa in the privacy of your own room or in our Massage and Meditation Gazebo.

Amed Bali

Medical Services

If you are in need of general medical services or if you require more specialized medical services it would be best to contact the various Western based hospitals such as BIMC or SOS in Kuta. However, in case of severe emergency, we do have a local hospital 30 minutes away in the city of Amlapura.

Laundry Services

A Laundry Service is available at Katana Villa for no additional charge. Please feel free to give all your soiled laundry to our house service personnel.

Organized Tours

At Katana Villa we have available to us the exclusive services of a professional English-speaking driver with an air-conditioned vehicle. The vehicle can seat up to seven people. Our driver and the vehicle are available for hire. Give or take according to the season, hire costs are from half-day USD$35 and full day USD$55. Please speak with your Villa or Grounds Manager if you require this service. We will provide you with a tour book full of suggestions that you choose from and your driver can take you there. Local attractions include the Royal Baths at Tirta Gangga; the ancient “Bali Aga” village of Teganan; the Royal Summer Palace at Ujung; or further afield to the Besakih Temple on the slopes of Mt Agung. There is also Lake Batur and Kintamani where you can view the volcanoes and the mountain lakes; or closer to home the Palace of Justice in Klungkung and then on the way home visit the bat Caves at Goa Lawah.

We highly recommend that you hire a car and driver. Although car rentals are available, driving in Bali can be very dangerous for foreigners who are unfamiliar with the local road laws and customs, plus it is a nightmare to find directions. If you prefer an alternative, you can always use the house scooters, which are there for you at any time you want to use them.

Balinese Culture

Language – Most Balinese people speak some English, however please take time to ensure you are truly understood and be gracious if the Balinese get it wrong. It does happen. If in doubt, please ask again until you are satisfied with the answer. It can be rewarding to make some effort to speak Bahasa Indonesia, the national language of Indonesia.

Respect for Local Customs

Balinese CeremonyThe Balinese people are deeply religious. Ceremonies are an integral part of daily life in Bali. When visiting local Hindu Temples please ensure you are appropriately attired. Always wear a sarong and scarf to cover your arms and legs when entering a local Hindu Temple. If you wish to know more about Hindu customs, then feel free to speak with our English speaking staff, Iluh, Anna, and Wayan Dolle, they will explain it in more detail.

There is one unique Hindu Temple on the grounds of Katana Villa that was crafted by a true artisan who was flown in from Java. By Leslie’s request, Margi designed two snake dragons at the opening of the small entrance without either of them being aware of the old story that Katana Villa’s land is known to have Seven Snake Dragon Spirits that visit from the Valley of Bangle. This special Temple is located in the front gardens just outside the gate and new offerings are given daily by our sweet little Wayan.

Shoes

Balinese remove their shoes when they enter a house. Don’t feel that you need to follow suit while at Katana Villa. The floors are less slippery if you keep your shoes on, and less exhausting for Western feet.

Bali Time

There is Western time and there is Bali time. In Bali everyone moves much, much slower than the normally stressed out Westerner. It may be difficult for some people to adjust to Bali time, but soon enough you will. After 2 or 3 days you will find your body clock slowly adjusting. You won’t be stressing out that easily anymore.

Money and Conversion

The Indonesian currency is the Rupiah. Best to change your money at your bank at home.

Lotus Flower most establishments accept credit cards, but not all do in Amed and Bunutan so make sure you bring enough cash before you leave Denpasar. The local currency, Rupiahs will be needed only for minor purchases or for small cafés and restaurants. Most currencies can be exchanged at the moneychangers as required. Major purchases can be done with your credit card, but again be aware that credit cards are not always accepted in our village and the nearest bank is a 35 minute drive away.

Currency conversion made easy; the best way to remember it is to remove the four zeros from the Rupiah amount. This changes it into the approximate USD exchange. Example Rp 100,000 nearly becomes USD$10.00 (which is approximately AUD$12.00). But please check the currency exchange rates on the internet because it changes daily.

Each Suite at the luxury villa is equipped with a safe. All valuables should be locked in the safe when not in use. Read the instructions on the inside wardrobe door before using the safe. If you require any assistance then speak with your Villa or Grounds Manager.

Shopping and Tours

Tanah Lot TourShopping – Local shopping in Amed is limited to basic food items, cheap clothing, carvings and trinkets. The local Amed Cafe (Supermarket) has it all at little prices. And “The Store” in Bunutan offers a wide variety of clothing, trinkets, beverages, spirits, and a small deli with the best Cappuccino in Bunutan.

If you want to go shopping for art and other assorted type goods then a trip to Ubud is a good place to shop for a variety of clothing, artworks, and jewelers. From budget items to high priced brands. Ubud has an amazing vibrant village atmosphere with just the right amount of Western influence.

If you want to shop home style but on half the cost then a day trip to Kuta is a recommended Discovery Mall, which is a popular place to go. You can seriously save on your credit card charges compared to home at many designer stores in the Mall. You should also try Mal Galleria on the By Pass Road behind Planet Hollywood at the big roundabout in Kuta.

Western Food

Local Dance at Sunset RestuarantIf you feel like shopping for Western food you may want to go to Carrefour on Sunset Road before heading out to Amed. If you wish to only dine, you may want to enjoy Dijon or Bali Bakery in Kuta, or Bali Deli in Seminyak, on your way through from the Airport. They have a great selection of Western foods at moderate prices. There is also a McDonalds and KFC in Kuta and Sanur but they’re just not the same as the real thing at home (if you like that kind of food). As you drive out, you will reach a village called Candi Dasa, which is the halfway point from Denpasar to Amed, and there are a variety of Western style restaurants to choose from. Then once you arrive in Amlapura (30 minutes before Amed) there is a Hardy’s supermarket, which is the closest to a Western style supermarket in our area. Once in Amed and Bunutan, our staff will direct you to the local restaurants that serve Western Style food.

Alcohol

When it comes to find inexpensive wine it is a difficult find in Bali. If you are a wine drinker, it is recommended that you either bring your own bottle or buy once you arrive at “The Store” in Bunutan or at “Amed Café” in Amed. Both stores have a choice of wines. However “The Store” has the largest selection, as well as spirits at a reasonable price.

The local drink Arak

The local alcoholic rice drink “Arak” is an uncontrolled spirit. It has been known to cause severe medical problems for some people. It has an extremely high alcohol content. Therefore, drink “Arak” in moderation and with extreme caution. And if you are interested to try it, we will be happy to show you how to make the famous “Arak Attack” drink.

Security and Safety

Police – When visiting Indonesia, you will need to register with the local police. There is no need for you to attend in person. We will handle this for you. All that is needed is a registration form and a photocopy of the photo page of your passport and the Visa page. The purpose of this registration is to keep a check on your whereabouts in Bali. Just in case of an emergency of major proportions. The police would know where to find you in order to safely evacuate you back to your home country.

Beaches and Surf

Bali BeachThe beach is only a few hundred meters in front of Katana Villa Bali. Due to the local volcano Agung, the beach has fine black sand and in some parts there are small rocks, so it is recommended to wear rubber shoes to avoid stepping on small lava rocks and corals. If you prefer lighter colored sand beaches, there is one only a three-minute scooter ride away at a nearby lagoon, and each beach is famous for its excellent snorkeling.

You will find a Dive Shop and Scuba Diving outfits at nearly every corner in every village all along the coast. Two famous shipwrecks are a favored local attraction amongst our guests. The Japanese Shipwreck is only a seven-minute scooter ride away. The American Liberty Shipwreck is about a half hour scooter or car ride away. Both Shipwrecks are in shallow crystal clear waters and can be seen with snorkeling gear or by diving with a full tank. The local diving shops will be happy to assist you in your choice of diving. They will also organize private tours, certify you and or be available as personal dive and guide master for your own dive. The waters are very safe to swim in. However, it is an unpatrolled beach so please be very careful at all times when on the beach and in the water, particularly when you are in the care of children.

General Security

The Balinese people are very easy going, honest and friendly by nature, it doesn’t mean that everyone is safe in Bali. Like all countries, Bali has some share of crime. So it doesn’t hurt to be careful with your valuables just in case. When not in use, you could always lock your valuables away in your bedroom safe.

Drugs

In Bali, doing drugs is a criminal offence. Possession and use of drugs is not allowed at Katana Villa. The government in Indonesia does not take drug possession lightly. The punishment is severe and not Western like; if caught you will go to jail and possibly hanged. Our staff are instructed by law to immediately report any evidence of such possession or use to the local Police.

Coconuts

When you come to Bali it feels like all you see are Palm trees. But you should know that most of them grow coconuts, which often fall to the ground. For your own safety do not walk or sit under coconut trees. Always be careful when you walk around them, you don’t want to get knocked out while on vacation!

Shuto The Monkey

Monkey for those of you who are intrigued with the human-like behavior of a Primate, you are in for a treat. Little Shuto is well known in Bunutan and Amed because he often goes on scooter rides and dines at certain restaurants. He is a Long Tail Macaque who lives in a water tower next door to Katana Villa. He was adopted when he was a mere 4 months old and has been living next to the property for three years. He is an avid swimmer and totally domesticated. He will not be entering the property during your stay, but if you wish we could set up times so you can watch him swim in pool. He is a real character with a huge personality who always carries stuffed teddy bears in his arms or mouth and often falls in love with large kind-hearted men.

Geisha The Dog

Geisha belongs to the owners and to Katana Villa. She is a member of our 24 hour security team. Geisha is a beautiful mix of German Shepard and Bali mut. She is extremely friendly and not aggressive at all. She lives outside the security walls of the villa with her best friend Shuto. If you like dogs, she will be very pleased if you invite her in for visits. For your pleasure you can view a typical day of the two of them playing together.
